Swirl cake

This is one of my favorite cakes so far!
I made it on a bit of whim. I had been searching Pinterest and watching YouTube tutorials on different ways to ice a cake with buttercream, when I came across this video from Baked Tribeca.
After watching the video a time or two (or five...), I knew I had to try and make the "swirl".
We had some friends coming over so, it was the perfect opportunity to try it.

So, after several attempts, this was the final result...

I like how the swirl gives it a vintage feel. I also like that when the cake is textured, you don't have to spend forever trying to smooth out the buttercream!

And just to practice, I also made a couple of gumpaste gerberas to put on it.

Did you notice the lovely cake turntable/stand?
It's a Joseph Réal Design original that Dave made for me when I started my cake decorating classes.
I love it because it not only displays the cake nicely, but it's also makes decorating cakes so much easier.
You can check out more of his work here.
